PAKLENICA - National Park, Croatia
Paklenica National Park
The most attractive and most valuable parts of south Velebit (mountain in Croatia) are surely the impressive canyons of Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica. In 1949, these areas were proclaimed a national park, making Paklenica the second oldest of Croatia’s national parks (second only to Plitvice Lakes National Park). It is located in Starigrad, northern Dalmatia, at the southern slopes of Velebit mountain, not far from Zadar.

The relatively small area has an abundance of geomorphological phenomena and forms, diverse flora and fauna, attractive landscapes and intact nature. Vertical cliffs rise above both sides of the canyons, up to a height of over 700 m. Today there is no water flowing throughout canyons. Hiking is the only way to really get to know Paklenica. The Park area contains numerous trails and paths intended for tourists. Paklenica National Park is the most visited climbing site in Croatia, and the largest in Southeast Europe. The close proximity of seawater gives this climbing site a special charm, making Paklenica Riviera an ideal place to combine climbing and water sports.
