PLITVICE LAKES - National Park, Croatia
Plitvice lakes National Park
Croatia's first National park established in 1949 covers 296.85 km2 of
breathtaking natural splendor. It is the largest among the eight national parks
of the country. The park was inscribed on the UNESCO's World Heritage List in
1979, in recognition of its "outstanding natural beauty and undisturbed
production of travertine through chemical and biological action". Plitvice Lakes
are one of the most beautiful natural sights in Europe. The park harbours a
grand collection of 16 terrace-formed lakes, which are mutually connected with
waterfalls and cascades. The lakes are renowned for their distinctive colors,
ranging from azure to green, grey or blue. About eight km of arranged walking
paths (which in most cases means wooden bridges built over lake surface) are
accessible to visitors.
