Kalelarga
The popular street Kalelarga, Zadar's main street since the ancient times,
is the most famous street of Zadar. Some people say it is even older than the
city itself, spreading in the direction west - east from People's Square to the
Forum. In the Second World War almost all the buildings in the street were
destroyed; as such Kalelarga was renovated in the Modern style, retaining only
its main direction.
Though today its official name is Široka Ulica (Wide Street), in everyday speech
its name always has and always will be Kalelarga. It is the place of
socialisation, entertainment and recreation, processions and folk ceremonies. To
Zadar locals, Kalelarga is more than the name of the city's main street. It is a
cult place and one of the symbols of the city.
