CHURCH AND MONASTERY OF SAINT MARY
Church of St. Mary, Zadar
St. Mary's Church, located in the old city opposite
St. Donatus' Church, belongs
to a Benedictine Convent founded in 1066 by a noblewoman from Zadar by the name
of Cika. It's most beautiful part is a fine Romanesque campanile from 1105 of,
so called, Lombardian type.
The Permanent Ecclesiastical Art Exhibition "The Gold and Silver of Zadar" in
the Benedictine Convent of St. Mary, which contains gold and silver objects that
date from the 8th to 18th century, is one of the most valuable exhibitions in
Croatia. Also included are manuscripts, sculptures, embroideries, tapestry,
reliefs, etc., as evidence of the rich past of Zadar, which was an important
cultural center, particularly in the Middle Ages.
